I'm actually surprised to see there are definite improvements in almost every respect over my two year old 850 IS. Now that may sound silly but the glass is probably the same and the sensor just crams more pixels into the same size sensor, which we all know doesn't necessarily improve performance.
However, the level of detail of this latest model is clearly a step up and the ISO range is usefully greater. The iContrast and Face detect timer also seem like very useful additions, rather than gimmicks like seen on so many others.

This model also does not seem to have the manual controls that IXUS owners have been craving for. More megapixels and gimmicks just don't do the trick.
I also have an 850IS, previously owning an Ixus 500....in between, I briefly had a 7MP Ricoh (briefly as in...a week), which had a 7x optical zoom and supposedly great features but I wasn't convinced of the image quality and it felt plasticky...
say whatever else, these little metal Ixus models ooze pure quality when you're holding them, they are constructed so well out of good materials...plus Canon don't exactly have a bad reputation for their optics! I think the only thing that could sway me for buying a holiday camera is the monster zooms on those Lumix compacts!
Maybe I'm being a bit of a layman but as a point and click I can't see myself replacing the 850IS till it breaks (if such a thing happens!), it takes great pictures in most conditions, I'm sure this newer model is similar in that respect.
@Ed - I definitely think you should resist the upgrade urge, do you REALLY need the slight improvements? (I think my 850IS pics would look good up to at least A3 size, so for 6x4 it's good enough!). Just think of all the gadgets you don't already have that you could spend the £200 on ;o)
Hehe, cheers gdawg304 but I'm already convinced I don't need to upgrade. My 850 IS is still going strong and I hope it will continue to do so for a good while yet.
You can get the VAT reduction off that £119.99. You have to use the LOWERVAT code till monday... that brings the price down to 116 or 117. There is a free case with it as well.
