Vodio Review

Vodio is an app that aims to do for video, what the likes of Flipboard and Google Currents do for news. On start up it displays a list of twelve topics ranging from Tech and Entertainment through to News and Style, and asks you to pick the five that interest you the most.

Once you’ve selected your topics of choice, the iOS application, which is fully compatible with the new iPhone 5 and iPad 3, builds a number of different channels that you can browse through. To switch between channels you swipe horizontally on the screen and to browse through videos in a channel you swipe vertically up and down. The interface uses a neat 3D style carousel menu that lets you move smoothly from one channel to the next, and if you swipe upwards on a channel stream it’ll load in additional videos. It all looks very slick and dynamic.

As you’d expect, when you want to play a video you just tap on its thumbnail in the main window and you’ll then be zapped to the playback screen. Here swiping right or left skips to the next or previous video in the channel list and there are also Tivo-style thumbs up and thumbs down icons to tell the app that you either like the video, and want to see more like it, or that you disliked the suggested content and that it should show less videos of a similar nature. The video player window also has a pullout tab on the right hand side that you can use to switch channels or browse a list of other videos in the channel you’ve selected.

Back at the main home screen you can add extra channels or customise the ones you’ve already selected to create more individual and niche feeds. There really are an awful lot of channels to choose from, so you should have no problem finding some that are of interest.

What’s more, you can also allow Vodio to connect to your social network feeds, such as Facebook and Twitter, so it can work out the types of topics that pique your interest and automatically add related videos into your feeds.

Verdict
All in all, it’s difficult not to like Vodio. The iOS application’s interface has a very slick and modern feel, its suggestion engine seems to be pretty robust and it offers an enormous number of channels to choose from. It’s definitely worth a download.
