Marantz SR6007 Review - Features Review

Sections

The SR6007 is teeming with features both on the home cinema and networking sides. On the latter it offers AirPlay support, allowing you to conveniently stream music from iPhones, iPads and PCs/Macs running iTunes – something not found on some of its high-profile rivals.

It’s also DLNA certified, and can stream music from Windows PCs, Android devices and NAS drives, with an audiophile-friendly list of supported formats – FLAC and WAV (24-bit/192kHz), Apple Lossless (ALAC), MP3, WMA and AAC. Music can also be played back via the USB port, from a flash drive or iPod/iPhone.

But if you get bored of your own music collection then there’s also a healthy range of internet music streaming services to explore, including vTuner internet radio, Last.fm and Spotify. The addition of Spotify (thanks to a recent firmware update) brings the SR6007 up to par with Onkyo, which has offered the streaming service for the last few years. You can also access your Flickr photo sharing account if the mood takes you.

On the home cinema side, the SR6007 powers out a healthy 110W from each of its seven channels, and boasts decoders for Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio, as well  all the other key Dolby and DTS formats (DTS ES, 96/24, Dolby Digital EX).

The Marantz also boasts Dolby Pro Logic IIz and Audyssey DSX, which expand the soundstage vertically with front height channels. That involves moving the surround back speakers to the front of the room, ideally above the TV. Audyssey DSX additionally lets you enjoy front width channels by placing the speakers to the side of the front channels.

The SR6007 has also added 4K upscaling to its arsenal, a feature that’s becoming more relevant as 4K TVs and projectors trickle onto the market. 4k sources are few and far between and mainstream use is some way off, but the Marantz is fully futureproofed – it’ll upscale all SD and HD sources to 3840 x 2160, as well as supporting HDMI passthrough and GUI overlay for all defined 4k resolutions.

Elsewhere on the feature list is MDAX2, Marantz’ compressed audio enhancer, and Pure Direct mode, which cuts out all audio processing.
