Kyocera ECOSYS M2030dn – Print Speeds
Kyocera specs the ECOSYS M2030dn at 30ppm, which is fast for a machine in this class. Our 5-page mono text test gave a speed of 11.5ppm, which isn’t close to the claim, but the longer, 20-page test nearly doubled this to 20.3ppm. Even then, 30ppm seems a bit hopeful, though a lot of this shortfall is due to the 15s preparation time, before printing starts.
The 5-page text and graphics document completed with a very similar speed to the 5-page text only, at 10.7ppm, while the 20-page document printed 10-page duplex gave 13.6 sides per minute. Although these real-world speeds may not tally with the spec, subjectively jobs come through quickly, once printing has started.
A 5-page copy took 20 seconds and a 10-side duplex copy took exactly a minute, both of which are speedy. A 15 x 10cm photo on A4 came through in 17 seconds and a full A4 jpg image from a USB drive took just 12s. Both healthily quick.
Kyocera ECOSYS M2030dn – Print Quality and Costs
Print quality is generally good on prints. There’s clean black text, a little lighter than from some mono lasers, but very readable. Graphics are also fair, though greyscale fills can be a little blotchy and lacking in smooth variation. This affects photo prints, too, where dark greys can veer to black. Photocopies are fine on text, but some definition is lost in greyscales.
The only consumable is toner, and the best price we could find gives a page cost of 2.6p. This is low and makes this an economical machine to run.
Should I buy a Kyocera ECOSYS M2030dn?
You get a lot of all-in-one for your money with this machine. Competitors, like the Brother DCP-8110DN, miss out on the Kyocera’s duplex ADF, fax functions and programmable function keys, though it’s noticeably faster at printing and copying.
Verdict
Kyocera has put together a very worthwhile, mono laser all-in-one with the ECOSYS M2030dn. It integrates all the functions required in most small offices, is speedy and inexpensive to run and offers the extra functionality of duplex print, scan and copy.
