Despite a couple of minor niggles, such as the relative importance given to text on the main control screen and the apparent inability to combine backup categories, it scores well with AV-Test and does its job in a sensible and robust way.
Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security – Performance
When we scanned 30GB of test files, Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security checked 200,862 files in 56 minutes, giving a transfer rate of 60 files/s. This is a little lower than average for recent AV suites.
Rerunning the scan took just six seconds to check 5,258 files, showing an exceptional rate of fingerprinting. Just as well, as running a scan has a noticeable resource hit on other tasks.
AV-Test (www.av-test.org) scored the suite at 16.0/18.0, close to the highest score it has given. As well as being an excellent score overall, it breaks down well over the three categories the organisation measures.
The Protection score was 5.5/6.0, with a full 100 percent detection of established malware and very high scores on recent and zero-day threats, too.
The suite also scored 5.5/6.0 for Repair, which measures how well the software copes with sorting out the mess malware can wreak on a system. Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security has a specific tool for this, Post-Infection Microsoft Windows Troubleshooting, though you have to dig in Additional Tools to find it.
The Usability score was 5.0/6.0, which indicates a reasonable resource hit, though subjectively we would have put it higher.
Should I buy Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security?
The scope of Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security is roughly that of Norton 360 and at similar cost is a good alternative to this and other well-known names. It has all the key elements and though it could do with a more thorough PC tune up facility, that’s a secondary function for an IS suite.
There are suites which work in a slightly more obvious way, such as http://www.trustedreviews.com/bullguard-premium-protection_Software_review Bullguard Premium Protection, though this one doesn’t score quite as highly as Kaspersky in AV-Test’s tests.
