Epson Expression Premium XP-510 – Print Speeds
Epson claims the Expression Premium XP-510 can print at speeds of 9.5ppm for black and 9.0ppm for colour. When we ran our 5-page document test, we saw 6.8ppm and the longer, 20-page test gave 7.9ppm, not far off the claim.
Duplex print, which is standard on the printer, printed the 20-page document as a 20-side, 10-page document in 4 minutes 39 seconds, giving a speed of 4.3 sides per minute. The 5-page black text and colour graphics print gave 5.0ppm exactly. All these speeds are good or better than average for a machine in this class.
A single-page copy took 36s and 15 x 10cm photos took 1:06 at best photo quality and 47 seconds from a Samsung Galaxy Mini smartphone at standard quality. 47s is a very good time for a print from a mobile device.
Epson Expression Premium XP-510 – Print Quality and Costs
The prints themselves vary a bit. Black text is not that sharp and shows some jaggies, even though the resolution is 5,760 x 1,440ppi. Colours are bright, though, and black text over colour fill is reasonably well registered. Colour fills show some dither patterns and colour copies lose some definition.
Photo prints are sharp and colours are bright, but dark shades tend to black and some detail is lost. In general use, though, print quality is only fair.
The ‘Polar Bear’ cartridges are available in two yields, with the XL versions giving page costs of 3.4p for black and 11.7p for colour. The black text cost is a little higher than some of the competition, but the colour cost is a lot higher.
Should I buy an Epson Expression Premium XP-510?
We have seen several similar machines, such as the https://www.trustedreviews.com/brother-mfc-j870dw_Printer_review Brother MFC-J870DW and https://www.trustedreviews.com/hp-photosmart-7520_Printer_review HP Photosmart 7520 costing up to three pence less for a colour page than this Epson machine. Of course, if you can find a cheaper source of ink cartridges, this difference will reduce.
Verdict
The Epson Expression Premium XP-510 is a neat, small footprint inkjet all-in-one. It is as easy to print from a mobile, using Epson’s own apps, as it is to print from a PC. It’s reasonably quick, though prints could be sharper and colour page costs are higher than some of the competition.
