Dell B1265dfw – Print Speeds

Dell claims a print speed of 28ppm for the B1265dfw, though on our 20-page test document we saw a maximum speed of 21.1ppm, only three quarters of the claim. On the shorter, more typical, 5-page document, it only managed 13.6ppm, which was also the speed of the same print in eco-mode.

The printer has duplex facilities built-in and the 20-page document printed as a 10-page duplex test finished in 1:44, a speed of 11.5 sides per minute. The 5-page text and graphic document took 21 seconds, marginally quicker than the straight text test.
Dell B1265dfw - Trays
While not being that close to the spec sheet, the speeds returned by this machine are very reasonable for use in a SOHO office. Copy speeds too were good, with a single page from the flatbed taking 18s and a 5-page document from the ADF finishing in 25s.

A 15 x 10cm photo on A4 took 14s at best quality and a full A4 print from a Samsung Galaxy Mini Android phone took 32s, both fine.

Dell B1265dfw – Print Quality and Costs

Text print quality is very good, with well-formed characters from the 600dpi print engine and good dense headlines and inverted text. Greyscales are also better than average, with little sign of blotchiness or banding. Some of the greyscales in fills look too similar when representing colours, but in general there are few problems.
Dell B1265dfw - Cartridge
The single drum and toner cartridge is available in two yields, of 1,500 and 2,500 pages and using the higher yield cartridge gives a cost per page of 3.6p, including 0.7p for paper. This is a bit high for this class of machine, where 3.1p per page is closer to the average.

Should I buy a Dell B1265dfw?

There are rivals to this machine from Canon with the https://www.trustedreviews.com/canon-i-sensys-mf4780w_Printer_review i-SENSYS MF4780w and Samsung itself, with the SCX-3405W, though neither of these has duplex and the Samsung has no ADF. The feature set offered by this comparatively low priced machine is good, measured against most of the others available.

Verdict

The Dell B1265dfw is a solid SOHO all-in-one which prints quickly from a variety of sources, produces good quality prints, is easy to use and doesn’t cost the earth to run. Having said that, there are cheaper all-in-ones to run, if that’s a key factor in your purchase decision.
