Canon PIXMA iP7250 – Performance

Canon claims speed of 15ppm for black print and 10ppm for colour from the PIXMA iP7250. Our 5-page black text print gave 9.7ppm and this increased to 10.7ppm on the 20-page document, only about two thirds of the rated speed, but healthy enough for this class of printer.

The black text and colour graphics print gave 3.9ppm, which is also quite a bit lower than spec. Part of this is due to fairly random bouts of housekeeping, where the machine charges its heads or checks media, sometimes in the middle of a print run.
Canon PIXMA iP7250 - Speeds and Costs
Duplex print has always been slow on Canon inkjets and here it managed 4.1 sides per minute, still slow but noticeably quicker than previous generation machines. Photo prints are remarkably quick, though, completing in 51s from a PC and 56s from a Samsung Galaxy Mini Android smartphone.

Even though Canon is pitching the machine at the lifestyle market, it makes quite a lot of noise, with peaks of 66 DBA measured at 0.5m. As usual, it’s feeding paper which is the noisiest part of the print.

Print quality is what we’ve come to expect from Canon; sharp, dense, black print of text on plain paper with clean, vivid graphics and pretty good reverse text. Photos are well-balanced and with plenty of detail in light and dark areas of the image. Smooth transitions and natural hues make photos look authentic and easily up to Photo Booth standards.
Canon PIXMA iP7250 - Cartridges
The five ink cartridges are of a new type and still attracting a bit of a price premium, giving page costs of 3.7p the black and 9.8p for colour. These are quite high when compared with rival machines in the same price bracket, but we would expect prices to drop as the cartridges become more freely available.

Verdict
Canon has put a good bit of design thought into the revamp of this mid-range photo printer and the PIXMA iP7250 benefits in several areas. It’s a very practical, easy-to-use machine and its ability to print on plain, photo and CD/DVD media make it a useful device. Excellent print quality, but a little expensive on ink.
