BEM KickstandBEM Kickstand: Sound Quality

The sound produced by most ultra-portable projectors can usually be summed up in a single non-too-complimentary four-letter word. The Kickstand, though, does a bit better than most of its direct rivals, pumping out much more volume than you would expect from its mere 2 x 2W speaker rig. This volume doesn’t come at the expense of horrible distortions or excessive sharpness in the upper register either.

Dialogue feels rather locked inside the Kickstand’s body rather than being projected towards the screen as happens with the Optoma ML1000 portable projector. And pretty much any external audio system would give you a better result. But it’s nonetheless one of the better built-in audio performances we’ve heard from a tiny projector.

Other things to consider

The remote control you get with the Kickstand is obviously pretty small given its need to slot into the front edge of the main Kickstand projector body. But surprisingly it’s still both quite comfortable to use and perfectly effective with its buttonry.

Another positive point about the BEM is that despite being fairly bright by Pico projector standards, it runs unusually quietly. Certainly the built-in speakers are easily capable of over-riding any fan noise the projector produces.

Should I buy a BEM Kickstand?

If you’re after a flexible ultra-portable projector capable of working decently well in both home and work environments and which is uniquely easy to set up, the Kickstand is definitely worth checking out. Its design is a triumph of practicality, while also looking cool enough to become an enthusiastic talking point.

There are some slightly better Pico projection performers out there for the same sort of money – most notably the 3M MP410. But as an all-round package the BEM is a unique proposition.

Verdict

Although it’s not quite talented enough in its colour performance to earn a full recommendation, the BEM Kickstand’s genius design makes it a winningly practical, unusually flexible projector for both business and home use.
