The 27-inch iMac 2015 comes with a brand-new wireless mouse and keyboard, both of which pair with the iMac automatically.
The mouse is almost identical to the Magic Mouse, with which we’re familiar. It features gesture control and is pretty compact, if a little too slender for my taste, and glides smoothly. Instead of taking two AA batteries, however, it runs on a rechargeable pack that you power up through a Lightning cable.
A single, full charge of a couple of hours will see the mouse last a good few months, plus you can get a full day from only a two-minute power-up. Good job too, since Apple has decided to place the charging port on the unit’s base, so there’s no way of using it while it’s charging.
The keyboard has been built from the ground up and isrechargeable. It rests flatter on the desk, since it doesn’t need to house chunky batteries, and is smaller than previous models. However, the keys are actually larger and I found it far easier to type on, making fewer mistakes than on keyboards past.
In addition, the keys are flatter and have less travel, but there’s still more than enough for typing to feel accurate and solid. Most impressive is just how quiet the new Magic Keyboard is; typing is almost silent.
Should I buy the 5K iMac 27-inch 2015?
It isn’t cheap, but the 27-inch iMac is the best all-in-one computer around. Every element, from its design to that incredible screen, is top-notch.
If you decide to take the plunge then I’d recommend opting for the mid-range model, at the very least, which comes with the 1TB Fusion Drive and upgraded graphics card. Although it’s more expensive than the standard model, the performance improvements it offers are huge. This is especially important if you don’t intend to upgrade for the next three to five years.
Note, too, that iMacs retain their value particularly well, so if you do decide to sell after a few years, you’re likely to make back close to what you spend.
In my opinion the 5K iMac 27-inch 2015 has no weaknesses, and I find it hard to imagine that anyone other than avid gamers will regret having it adorn their desks.
Verdict
