not a New Year’s sale as such, the recent price drop of the BlackBerry

PlayBook was deliberately timed. At release, the 16GB BlackBerry

PlayBook cost around £360, but now it’s available for less than half

that sum. Such drastic price-cutting is down to poor sales, but given

the sheer quality of hardware you’re getting here, it deserves a second

look. The BlackBerry PlayBook has a 7in capacitive touchscreen,

dual-core processor and the swish QNX operating system. It lacks many

features of its iOS and Android counterparts, including – still – a

proper email client, but, hey, at least it has Angry Birds now.
Orange Monte Carlo smarpthone
Available for £89 from Argos (subject to mandatory £10 top-up) –  Read our full review
Monte carlo
ZTE is a company that knows how to put pressure on the big smartphone players. Its Blade phone, re-branded as the Orange San Francisco,

re-defined what you could expect from a sub-£100 smartphone. With the

Monte Carlo, it has ventured even further. Available for just £89, it

offers a giant 4.3in screen that invites comparisons to much more

expensive phones, such as the HTC Desire HD and Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S.

It doesn’t have it all – the 800MHz processor isn’t blazingly fast and

the build quality can’t match these more expensive rivals – but if you

want the big-screen smartphone experience without shelling out £400 or

more, this is blinding value.
