GDPR emails spamming your inbox? Try this

You’d have thought that now General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a new set of rules designed to regulate how companies collect and treat your personal data, is now in full effect, the onslaught of emails notifying you of the changes would have come to an end. But that wasn’t the case. 

I’ve received more GDPR emails today than I have over the course of the past week. That’s why I decided to take action, sending all new emails bearing the term straight to the trash. I know, I know – it’s important. But, as the saying goes, once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. And that couldn’t be more true with GDPR.

So how can you follow suit and put an end to the GDPR madness? It’s simple. Fire up your email service of choice, then set up a filter to send any incoming emails containing the term ‘GDPR’ to the trash. Or you can have them directed to a separate folder, so you can work your way through them at a later date.

Here’s how to do it on Gmail (Web):

1. Launch Gmail.
2. Head to the Search bar, then tap the downwards-facing arrow.
3. Type ‘GDPR’ into the Has the words field.
4. Click Create filter.
5. Decide whether you’d like to delete all emails containing the term GDPR or have them sent to a dedicated folder.
6. Press Create filter.

It’s also worth noting that you can backdate the filter (date within). I opted to have mine go back three days – that’s something I’d recommend you to do too if you rely on email for work, because chances are you aren’t going to want a slew of GDPR emails clogging up your inbox, making it impossible to stick to your usual workflow.
