ZTE U887 5-inch Samsung Galaxy Grand rival launched

ZTE has launched its own entry-level 5-inch phablet, the ZTE U887, following hotly on the heels of the Samsung Galaxy Grand.

Like the aforementioned Samsung Galaxy Grand, the ZTE U887 boasts a large 5-inch screen, but relatively modest specs elsewhere. While that display is large, for example, it’s only got an 800 x 480 resolution.

Powering that display is a 1.2GHz dual-core MT6277 CPU from MediaTek, backed by a somewhat weedy 512MB of RAM. This last spec could prove a bit of a bottleneck, as the likes of the Google Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 come with 2GB of RAM.

Similarly low is the ZTE U887’s 4GB of internal storage – around half of what we’ve come to expect from low to mid range smartphones in recent months.

The ZTE U887 features a 5-megapixel camera, which appears to fall short of the Samsung Galaxy Grand’s 8-megapixel unit.

Samsung’s own entry-level hybrid device, the Samsung Galaxy Grand, was announced just a couple of days ago. The announcement of the ZTE U887 has doubtless been made by way of a response, as both manufacturers look to lead the way in the newly emerging affordable phablet category.

As reported by Engadget, there’s no word yet on price or release date for the ZTE U887, but we’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.
