ZTE Open launched as first Firefox OS handset

ZTE Open has been revealed as the first Firefox OS handset, with the ZTE smartphone designed to be an entry-level handset for developing countries and consumers with limited budgets.

The 3.5-inch display and 3.2-megapixel camera are just some of the entry-level features of the first Firefox OS handset, but the ZTE Open is designed to be such a budget device.

“ZTE continues to push the boundaries with the aim of bringing customers the very latest that mobile technology has to offer.” said Mr. He Shiyou, ZTE EVP and Head of the Mobile Devices Division.

“ZTE has moved very quickly and has worked closely with us to develop a robust Mozilla Firefox OS smartphone,” added Brendan Eich, Co-founder and CTO of Mozilla. “Firefox OS brings powerful open Web technologies to the smartphone market, giving users more choice and more options that reflect their lifestyle.”

ZTE Open Features
The ZTE Open features a 3.5-inch HVGA TFT display with a 480 x 320p resolution powered by a Qualcomm MSM7225 chipset. With just 256MB of Ram and 512MB of internal storage, the ZTE Open won’t be winning any races but the first Firefox OS handsets were always going to be aimed at developing markets.

In the rear, the ZTE Open has a 3.2-megapixel fixed-focus camera, but lacks a front-facing camera of any kind. It does offer Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 capabilities alongside a GPS feature and 1200mAh battery.

The key feature of the ZTE Open will be the new Firefox OS, which will provide a high-speed open platform designed for developers looking to create HTML5-based websites and apps. Developers will be able to offer their apps through a dedicated Mozilla Firefox Marketplace as well as directly to the consumers themselves.

ZTE Open Release Date and Price
Mozilla has been very tight lipped about the availability and price of the upcoming ZTE Open smartphone. All ZTE has said is that the Firefox OS handset will launch in Spain, Venezuela and Columbia mid-2013, with UK and US release dates still in the wind.
