YouTube trumps TV networks with mobile views alone

We all know that YouTube is the market leader in online video, but has it trumped TV too?

According to YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, it certainly has – in specific demographics, at least.

She revealed that Google-owned video giant is now reaching more people between the ages of 18 and 49 than any TV network on the planet.

What’s more staggering is that she’s talking about mobile alone, with YouTube trumping network TV even without including desktop- and TV-viewing figures.

Let me tell you from running a service, that is not easy to achieve,” the CEO declared, as reported by The Verge.

It should be noted that this metric covers how many individuals YouTube actually reaches, and how much content is viewed. That’s important because YouTube is a global platform, whereas most TV networks operate nationally.

Wojcicki was light on specifics, but said that the number of people visiting YouTube has grown 40 per cent year-on-year.

The CEO also claimed that time spent on the video-sharing site had risen by 50 per cent.

That’s a sizeable leap considering the company has now been operating live for 10 years.

So what’s next for the big YT? Last month we reported on rumours that suggested the site was due to launch a subscription service.

Tipped to land within the next few months, an ad-free option is purportedly ‘rapidly taking shape’, and may cost around $10 a month (around £6).

YouTube has stayed quiet on the matter however, but we’re interested to know whether you’d be willing to pay for ad-free video viewing. Let us know in the comments.
