YouTube co-founder hints at new video collaboration site

Chad Hurley, the man who co-founded YouTube and helped to make it the web’s most famous video service before selling it to Google in 2006, has announced that he has a new video sharing service on the way.

Speaking to an audience at the South by Southwest festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, Hurley said the new site would be “primarily video-based” but would not be seeking to compete with YouTube.

Sitting on a panel with Digg founder Kevin Rose Hurley said: “I wish [South by Southwest] was a month later because I could unveil the new product.

He added that the new collaborative tool “gives flexibility for people to work together and create content.”

Hurley, who along with Steve Chen, brought in $1.6 billion (just over £1 billion) after selling YouTube to the Mountain View-based search giant, has been relatively quiet since stepping down as company CEO in 2010.

Now he’s ready to re-emerge, his thoughts are certainly not spent on taking down the video sharing monster he helped to build, but focused on enabling collaboration through the video medium.

He added: “We’re not setting up to [kill YouTube]—now. There’s always going to be a place for YouTube.”

Judging by Hurley’s comments it appears that the launch may happen in the next month or so. This definitely looks like one to keep an eye on and we’ll update you when the plans are unleashed.
