In an expansion to its multi-file and 1GB upload proposals in November, the famed site of everyday trivialities has officially begun removing the 10 minute video limit for its favourite partners. An internal memo explained:
”Long Form Content
You now will be able to upload and monetize videos in your account that are longer than 10 minutes. This feature is exclusively for partners. Independent Film makers that partner with us will now be able to upload their feature films on our site. Please note that for long form content, the maximum file size is 1GB.”
Yes, the terrifying phrase ‘monetize’ is in there but from what we understand this comes in the form of additional integrated advertising rather than a transition to a full iTunes-esque business model. How long will 1GB buy you? Obviously it depends on the resolution and bitrates used, but the infamous ‘DVD rips’ long downloaded via various P2P networks can cram an entire movie into 700MB at virtually VGA quality which is up to that of standard TV.
When will consumers also get this sizeable (no pun intended) perk? I imagine there will be a significant delay as it is likely to lead to copyright infringement on scale never seen before – and also two hour versions of that dog on a skateboard…
