You can now control your Sonos speakers using Spotify

Earlier this year, Sonos announced a load of new partnerships with the likes of Amazon and Spotify that would bring new features to its line of speakers.

Now, the company has announced Spotify integration is live, in public beta form – allowing Sonos owners to control their speaker setups direct from the Spotify app.

Previously, users would have to use Sonos’ proprietary offering, meaning a lot of app switching, but now they can send whatever’s playing on Spotify to any Sonos speaker, including Spotify Playlists.

What’s more, the Spotify app can interact with speakers over the internet rather than requiring the phone or tablet to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

That means, you’ll be able to control the speaker setup over a data connection or from another Wi-Fi network, which Sonos suggests you use to “play a song to a loved one while you’re away from home.”

We’re not sure giving your significant other a heart attack is advisable, but there’s a lot of other cool features, such as if your friends are over at your house and on your Wi-Fi, they can use their own Spotify app to play music on your Sonos system.

Using the Spotify app, users will also be able to control grouping, meaning you can now group your speakers for specific rooms direct from the app.

You can learn more about the public beta here. It’s available on Android, Mac, and PC but the update will be available on all platforms, including iOS, upon general availability.

Just when that will be remains unclear at this point, but stay tuned for more in the near future if you’re an iOS user.
