Yahoo launches mail app with password-free log-in

Yahoo has launched a new Yahoo Mail app and an alternative to password sign-ins they are calling Yahoo Account Key.

The mail app, available on iOS and Android, will feature several improved features including smarter search, contacts management, and rich compose.

Mobile and desktop users can now connect and manage other email accounts including, Hotmail and AOL Mail directly from Yahoo Mail.

Yahoo Mail’s features will be available across all mailboxes once they have been synced.

Senior vice president of communication products at Yahoo, Jeff Bonforte says “What we want from our inbox is evolving. Mobile use requires a faster and smarter inbox. Both of these needs are at the center of our new app.”

The company has also launched Yahoo Account Key which they claim is a more secure and simple alternative to passwords.

Account Key will allow users to log in “with the tap of a button” using their mobile phones and push notifications.

Earlier this year, Yahoo launched on-demand passwords which allowed users to sign in to their accounts using codes that were texted to them.

Vice president of product management at Yahoo Dylan Casey says “We’re now taking a major leap towards a password-free future with the launch of Yahoo Account Key, which uses push notifications to give users simple and secure access using their mobile device.”

The new method of signing in means that once activated, even if someone has access to your account information, they won’t be able to sign-in.

Account Key is available for the Yahoo Mail app now and will be rolling out to other Yahoo apps this year.

You can download the mail app for Android and iOS today from the app store and Google Play store.

The desktop experience is available for U.S. users today and will be coming soon to users outside of the U.S.
