Yahoo! Appoints Google Veteran Marissa Mayer As CEO

Yahoo! has announced it has appointed 13-year Google veteran Marissa Mayer as its new President and Chief Executive Officer.

Taking over from interim CEO Ross Levinsohn, Mayer will be taking on the mammoth task of turning around Yahoo!’s ailing fortunes.

Expectations are high, though, as Mayer has some serious credentials. Since becoming Google’s 20th employee she has played an integral role at the company, launching over 100 products and features. More recently she has been in charge of the location and mapping division but in her time at Google she has been involved in a wide range of projects including the core search function, Google News, Gmail and for ten years she oversaw the famous Google homepage and its Google Doodle.

“”I am honored [sic] and delighted to lead Yahoo!, one of the internet’s premier destinations for more than 700 million users. I look forward to working with the Company’s dedicated employees to bring innovative products, content, and personalized experiences to users and advertisers all around the world.” said Mayer.

As for Yahoo!, it still boasts over 700 million unique monthly visitors a month so remains a huge online force. But, with massive competition from the likes of Google, Microsoft and Facebook, it has struggled to compete in recent years. The result is a company in need of a sprucing up, which is exactly what it hopes Mayer will provide.

Yahoo! Co-Founder David Filo said of the appointment, “Marissa is a well-known, visionary

leader in user experience and product design and one of Silicon Valley’s

most exciting strategists in technology development. I look forward to

working with her to enhance Yahoo’s product offerings for our over 700

million unique monthly visitors.”

track record in technology, design, and product execution makes her the

right leader for Yahoo! at this time of enormous opportunity,”
