Xiaomi takes smartphone top spot back from Apple in China

Xiaomi is now once again the biggest smartphone seller in China following a strong quarter.

Apple made waves earlier in the year when it shipped the most smartphones in China during the first quarter. It became the company’s second most important territory after the US.

China is a massive market dominated by strong local brands, so Apple’s success there was pretty huge news.

Equilibrium appears to have been restored for the second quarter of 2015, however. Xiaomi once again topped the charts with 15.9 percent of all shipments in its home country, reports Canalys (via TechCrunch).

However, the hot domestic brand won’t be resting easily, with local rival Huawei hot on its heels with 15.7 percent of the Chinese smartphone market. What’s more, Huawei’s figure represents 48 percent growth – the largest amount of any vendor operating in the region.

Apple slipped to third place for the quarter, but it’s unlikely to be too worried. The company will draw comfort form the fact that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are still performing well in China despite having been on the market since September of last year.

With the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus almost certain to ship next month, Apple will be expecting a resurgence in the Chinese market over the coming months.

These results should rather be of most worry to Samsung, which sits in fourth place despite its Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge flagship phones launching in April, as well as the more targeted launch in the region of the Samsung Galaxy A8.
