Xiaomi has announced that the Mi5 smartphone will finally be unveiled on February 24.
As regular readers and fans of Chinese smartphones will know, we’ve been waiting for Xiaomi’s next flagship phone for quite some time. “Xiaomi Mi5 tipped for January 15 launch,” reads one of our headlines from January 7, 2015.
Suffice to say, that Xiaomi Mi5 launch never happened. However, some renders and a video leaked right at the end of last year signified that something was afoot. Xiaomi SVP Liwang Jiang then confirmed that the Mi5 would launch after Chinese New Year (February 8).
Sure enough, Xiaomi’s global VP (and former Android chief) Hugo Barra has tweeted the news we’ve been waiting for:

Interestingly, that’s within the time frame of MWC 2015. Will there be an announcement at the show?
Following the likes of the Xiaomi Mi4C and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, you can be assured that this will be the company’s true flagship follow-up to 2014’s fine Xiaomi Mi4.
It’s been confirmed that the Xiaomi Mi5 will be powered by the latest Snapdragon 820 CPU.

Other specs are a little less certain, but there are rumours that the Mi5 will sport a 5.2-inch QHD display, a 16-megapixel camera, and a chunky 3,600mAh battery.
This being a Xiaomi phones, you can also expect it to be sharp looking (probably with a touch of Apple) yet surprisingly cheap. Whether we’ll see it any time soon outside of its native China is another matter.
