Xiaomi could be first to a 5G-ready phone, new official image shows
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 is shaping up to the first smartphone to ship with 5G capabilities, the company has teased. An executive at the Chinese firm posted a photo of a handset believed to be Mi MIX 3 handset, asking Twitter followers whether they could “see anything interesting?”
That interesting item is the presence of active 5G speeds in the status bar, beneath a no-notch, near bezel-less display. Given the phone is scheduled to ship next month, it’s likely this will be the first 5G-ready handset to hit the market.
The image comes from Donovan Sung, who is Xaiomi’s Director of Product Management and a global spokesperson, who also published the first official image above recently. You can see it in the tweet (via CNET) below.
Of course, this doesn’t mean the handset will be capable of hitting those lofty 5G speeds out of the box. No major 5G networks are expected to be active until well into next year and it’s clear this image was taken in a test environment.
Still, it’s exciting times for those considering their next smartphone purchase. With phones tending to last users longer, as spec and feature updates become less pronounced, future-thinking users will be seeking a 5G-ready phone so they can hit the ground running when the networks go live.
Elsewhere the phone is scheduled to include a slide-up selfie camera, as opposed to the pop-up option preferred by the Vivo Nex, as well as the speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and a 256GB storage drive.
