Xbox One sales top 2 million units says Microsoft

Microsoft has confirmed that global Xbox One sales have topped 2 million units during the console’s opening 18 days on sale.

Having launched in 13 countries around the world on November 22, including the UK and US, the Xbox One is said to be exceeding Microsoft’s expectations despite recording lower sales figures than its lead next-gen rival, the PS4.

With the PS4 having been exclusive to the US for two weeks after its November 15 Stateside launch, just days after the console’s November 29 European arrival Sony confirmed that more than 2.1 million PS4 consoles had been sold during its first 18 days of availability.

Despite reportedly slow sales of the Xbox One, Microsoft has suggested that the Xbox 360 follow-on is set to break company records.

“We continue to be humbled and overwhelmed by the positive response from our fans.” Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Strategy and Marketing for Xbox said. “We are thrilled to see sales of Xbox One on a record-setting pace, with over 2 million Xbox One consoles in homes around the world.”

He added: “Demand is exceeding supply in our 13 launch markets and Xbox One is sold out at most retailers. We’re also particularly excited to see consumers engaging in a wide range of games and entertainment experiences on the platform, with more than 1 million paid transactions on Xbox Live to date.”

John Love, Director of Video Games at Amazon added: “Demand for next generation gaming continues to be very strong. At peak demand, customers were ordering the Xbox One console at over 1,000 units per minute on Amazon.com.”

Earlier this week, Sony representatives suggested that the PS4 was currently outselling the Xbox One by a ratio of three-to-one.
