Xbox One reputation notifications coming soon with penalties for bad behaviour

The Xbox One features a simplified Reputation system to rid Xbox Live of unpopular players and now Microsoft plans to notify you when you’re off the cool list.

Microsoft has announced that it will reach out to the unpopular or trolling players with lots of negative feedback and penalise them for their bad behaviour.

All Xbox One users have a reputation that ranges from “Good” through “Needs Work” right the way to “Avoid Me”.

These ratings are based on whether Xbox Live players have reported you for bad behaviour or not. The longer you go without a thumbs down report, the higher your reputation climbs.

To back these ratings, Microsoft is now introducing notifications that will keep you informed when the Xbox Live community disproves of you and encourage you to change your behaviour.

“Gaming has always been a social activity, and for Xbox One we redesigned the Xbox Live community-powered reputation system from Xbox 360 to help better inform players about their behaviour in the community”, said Michael Dunn, Xbox Live Program Manager. “The algorithm looks to identify players that are repeatedly disruptive across the community on Xbox Live.”

If your reputation falls in the amber “Needs Work” section, you’ll start receiving reputation warnings to remind you to change your ways.

However, if you’re already in the red “Avoid Me” then you’ll begin to receive penalties for your actions.

Some of these punishments include reduced matchmaking pairings or the inability to use “certain privileges” including Twitch broadcasting.

“Remember, we designed the algorithm so it won’t penalise you for bad reports over a few weeks of play. The system also adjusts for false reports from people that might intentionally report someone of greater skill or for other griefing purposes,” added Dunn. “At the end of the day, our goal is to match you with other gamers you’ll enjoy, and create the best gaming community online.”

Microsoft also teased that it also has plans to introduce rewards for the players who consistently rank with “Good” reputation.
