Microsoft has discussed its Xbox One release date stock plans, with the company to ensure wannabe owners of the next-gen console will be able to walk in off the street and buy one.
Despite having earlier this week released a new batch of Day One Xbox One pre-order stock to satisfy the demands of the most avid gamers; Microsoft has confirmed that it continues to hold units back for the console’s in-store release later this year.
With an Xbox One release date having been confirmed as November 22 in recent days, the Redmond based manufacturer has stated that post launch high street and online sales are its priority, not satisfying the hardcore pre-order demand.
He added: “I want parents who don’t think about pre-ordering electronics to be able to walk in and have a chance to find a box. There might be a line, but I don’t want it to be that if you didn’t pre-order in September, you can’t get one. That doesn’t feel like a great consumer experience.”
Looking to build on past experience, the Microsoft VP has suggested that one of the company’s main aims is to avoid a repeat of the 2005 Xbox 360 release which saw many gamers and general consumers left frustrated as demand outstripped supply.
“Availability should feel a lot better than it did for 360,” Spencer stated. “If people want to pick up more controllers and games, they’ll be there.
“We feel really good about our pre-order number, and we’re managing it through allocation rather than demand. [Pre-order] isn’t the business. It’s way more important to me what happens when people walk in the store. The business is selling consoles.”
Microsoft confirmed last month that Xbox One pre-orders have already become the highest in the company’s history. The November 22 Xbox One release date will see Microsoft’s next-gen gamer hit UK retailers one week ahead of the November 29 PS4 release date. Despite getting the jump on the competition, the Xbox One will cost £80 more than its PlayStation branded rival, £429 to £349.
