Xbox One: new features unveiled at Comic Con

Several new Xbox One features have been unveiled during the Microsoft Comic Con panel, including the new Project Upload.

The Xbox One will continuously be recording the last five minutes of the user’s gameplay, Microsoft has confirmed.

Speaking at the San Diego Comic Con, Microsoft held a panel chaired by Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb, which included Microsoft Creative Director Ken Lobb and several game developers.

“It’s called ‘Project Upload’,” said Lobb. “So the idea is that you’re always recording. We have a ring buffer DVR basically, so the last five minutes of any game you’re playing is always being stored locally on your hard drive.”

Similar to the Share Button on the  DualShock 4 controller on the PS4, Xbox One gamers will be able to record and share their gameplay videos simply by saying “Xbox record” to the Kinect.

“We have things, basically a wrapper, so you can put up something that comes before and after. The [example] video we showed said ‘Best of Evo’, and you can also if you’d like, [add] voiceover and even put in some stuff from the Kinect camera, do picture-in-picture.”

The Kienct will also be able to recognise who is holding the Xbox One Wireless controller, even detecting any controller changes mid-game and adjusting player preferences accordingly.

Players can also customise their Xbox One Avatar by scanning their face using Kinect to create a full 3D image which then can be superimposed onto the Avatar. This even extends to the body type of the Avatar too, as the Kinect will be able to apply the gamer’s body type to their in-game persona.

Elaborating further on the Kinect capabilities, the motion gaming peripheral can identify individual finger movements within a three meter radius of the device. The Xbox One Kinect has a minimum range of one metre, meaning those with smaller living rooms can finally use Kinect properly.

The Xbox 360 Kinect was plagued with issues from launch as users with smaller gaming spaces weren’t able to use Kinect properly as it cut gamer’s heads and legs off if they got too close.

Xbox One gamers can also set up online matches using the Xbox SmartGlass app. The match won’t start until everyone is ready, when the Xbox One will automatically switch to the new game.

All of these new features are applicable to every game launching for the Xbox One.

The Xbox One release date has been set for sometime in November with a £429 price tag.
