Xbox Entertainment Studios still going

Microsoft’s abandoned Xbox Entertainment Studios is still functioning as an independent entity, and could be picked up by a major TV company.

It’s almost exactly a month since Microsoft cut its Xbox Entertainment Studios arm adrift in a bid to focus on gaming and rescue its troubled Xbox One console.

While you might expect that to have been the end of such an expensive media production studio, a new Hollywood Reporter story paints a different picture.

According to the report, Xbox Entertainment Studios still exists, and is shopping itself around to potential buyers. The studio has apparently held preliminary talks with Warner Bros. about “possibly becoming a stand-alone entity based at the studio.”

This would apparently involve merging Xbox Entertainment Studios with Machinima, the gaming-oriented YouTube network in which Warner Bros. holds a stake.

However, sources claim that such an agreement between the two companies is unlikely.

Xbox Entertainment Studios’s highest profile projects, including  a Halo series (produced by Stevem Spielberg, no less), the live action Halo: Nightfall (from Ridley Scott, no less) and the Signal to Noise documentary series, have been brought in-house at Microsoft.

What this all means for the future prospects of Xbox Entertainment Studios is unclear, but it’s interesting to note that the company is on the look out for a Creative Director, according to Microsoft’s Careers page.
