Xbox 720 May Not Have Disc Drive, Release in 2013

All the latest on the Xbox 720

According to information leaked by Microsoft partners, the Xbox 720 “Durango” – a possible name for the successor to the Xbox 360 – will not have an optical disc drive. It will have some form of storage, but the days of games on DVDs and Blu-rays may be numbered.

MCV writes that Microsoft has briefed partners that its next games console will not feature an optical drive. Instead, it will use some form of solid state storage, most likely based around a current memory card technology like SD. The console will reportedly arrive in 2013, and may be teased at E3 2012, the three-day Electronic Entertainment Expo held in Los Angeles from 5 June.Xbox 360 Slim

Sony has already said it will not show-off the long-rumoured Sony PS4 console at the show, but Nintendo’s next offering, the Wii U, has been public since 2011. If an announcement happens, it will undoubtedly be the biggest news of the show. However, Microsoft as since effectively denied the rumours, both of release date and lack of disc drive.

In a statement sent to MCV, the company stated, “We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Beyond that we do not comment on rumors or speculation.”

Microsoft Xbox
The first Xbox – not a looker

The current Xbox 360 has been around for six and a half years. In Europe, its predecessor the Xbox lasted just four and a half years before being discontinued.

While devices like the iPad and iPhone are speeding-up the pace of mobile games development, the console big guns have held court for a miraculously long time. And yet sales of both the Xbox 360 and PS3 remain strong – in February 2012 alone the Microsoft console sold 426,000 units in the US. But is it time for a next generation to appear?
