Windows XP SP3 RC2 On Windows Update

Roll up, roll up, get them while Vista remains a dog.

Those still looking to eek a little more juice out of Windows XP (and you’d be mad not to try with Vista being the alternative) have reason to feel warm and fuzzy this afternoon.

Microsoft has just posted its second release candidate (RC2) of Service Pack 3, the last major update expected for the six year old OS before it hits the scrap heap.

Interestingly – apart for the usual array of bug fixes and performance tweaks, which I’ve already covered a great many times – SP3 RC2 will be made publicly available via Windows Update.

The one caveat is users who wish to nab it this way will have to install an official patch (link below) to make it visible in Windows Update. That said, this move shows Microsoft has one heck of a lot of confidence in SP3 and I suspect we’ll be finding a final version imminently.

A final note of caution: those who previously installed the first SP3 RC will have to uninstall it first before installing RC2. Given this scenario is likely to be repeated with the official release you may wish to save yourself the faff and hold off…
