Windows Holographic is coming to everyday Windows 10 PCs in 2017

Microsoft has announced it will release a Windows 10 update next year that’ll bring the full Windows Holographic ‘mixed reality’ experience to mainstream PCs.

The update will mean owners of any Windows 10 compatible headset will be able to run the mixed reality experience pioneered on the HoloLens headset.

Once the update drops users will be able to run 2D and 3D apps at the same time as well as control the apps with 6-degrees of freedom. It’ll also be possible to multitask in mixed reality, Microsoft says.

In making the announcement, Windows chief Terry Myserson revealed the software will even run on the Intel NUC micro-PCs, so hardware demands won’t be that high.

Writing on the Windows Experience blog, he said: “Next year, we will be releasing an update to Windows 10, which will enable mainstream PCs to run the Windows Holographic shell and associated mixed reality and universal Windows applications.

“The Windows Holographic shell enables an entirely new experience for multi-tasking in mixed reality, blending 2D and 3D apps at the same time, while supporting a broad range of 6 degrees of freedom devices.”
