Windows 10 Mobile update delayed to 2016

Microsoft won’t start updating Windows Phone 8.1 devices to Windows 10 Mobile until some time in the New Year.

As recently as October, Microsoft insisted that the Windows 10 Mobile update would be commencing in December. Now, deep into the month in question, it’s been officially confirmed that this is no longer the case.

ZDNet points out that the official line from the company has changed.

“This November we introduced Windows 10 to phones including brand new features such as Continuum and Universal Windows Apps with the introduction of the Lumia 950 and 950 XL,” reads a Microsoft statement on the matter. “The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones.”

No specific details were provided on the reason behind this delay, nor do we know exactly when in 2016 we’ll be seeing the Windows 10 Mobile update start to appear.

Besides this ever-slipping release date, Microsoft still hasn’t provided a full list of the Windows Phone 8.1 handsets that will be getting a Windows 10 Mobile update.

As referenced by the company, Windows 10 Mobile is already on the market (in some territories at least) in the twin guise of the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, as well as in the affordable Lumia 550.
