Wild rumour: Samsung may be sniffing a Tidal acquisition

A reported meeting between Jay-Z and Samsung has got tongues in Silicon Valley wagging over a potential deal for the rapper’s Tidal streaming service.

Variety claims the hip-hop mogul met with a number of senior Samsung officials on Wednesday, including Daren Tsui, the company’s SVP of content and services.

Jay-Z was photographed leaving Samsung’s Silicon Valley offices, which immediately led to reports the Korean tech firm may be looking to do a deal of some kind for Tidal.

While talk of an acquisition would be rather premature, Samsung has just shut down its own, sparsely used Milk Music service.

The two parties could just as easily be talking investment, or discussing a deal which would see Tidal pre-installed on Samsung devices, or available to handset owners at a preferred rate.

Any deal would seem to make sense for Samsung, as it seeks to get in on the music streaming bandwagon. Right now it is depending on the likes Spotify, while Google Play Music is also available on Samsung devices.

It would be advantageous for Samsung to have its own ready-build solution for when Apple Music arrives on the Google Play Store.

While a straight-up acquisition seems unlikely at this stage – given Jay-Z’s ambitions for the firm he so recently purchased – a partnership through investment would certainly help all parties.
