Head-to-Head: Who should win VR Headset of the Year 2016? – Awards Special
Who should win VR Headset of the Year 2016? That’s what we’re asking in this Head-to-Head TrustedReviews Awards 2016 special. Evan Kypreos (@EvanKypreos) and Brett Phipps (@InverteBrett) are in the fighting seats, but who is right?
EVAN SAYS…
The HTC Vive is without doubt the ultimate VR headset on the market right now.
The room-scale VR you get with the Vive is a close to a real-life Holodeck as you can get. It’s incredibly immersive when you’re ducking and diving in the real world to dodge bullets and swords in the virtual world.
The HTC Vive is the most expensive headset, and it does require a powerful gaming PC, a decent sized room and a fair amount of time to setup – but once it’s up and running it’s absolutely worth it.
BRETT SAYS…
The Playstation VR is a lot cheaper and easier to setup than both the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift, which easily makes it the best virtual reality headset for me.
For just £349 you get a great VR experience that doesn’t require a super powerful PC, just a PS4. You can buy additional PS Move controllers for a more immersive experience, but if you’re on a budget you can always invest in these later on since they’re not required.
The Playstation VR has some of the best VR games and demos out there too, with over 50 games including the excellent Batman: Arkham VR and Resident Evil 7, due to be released before the end of 2016.
Is it the best technically? No. But it’s almost as good at a fraction of the price and that matters.
