WhatsApp wants to ruin your relationship this Valentine’s Day

There’s a hidden counter in WhatsApp that lets you see who you share the most messages, photos and videos with – and the app chose to bring this to our attention on Valentine’s Day?

The WhatsApp trick lets you check who you’ve been messaging the most (and who has been messaging you back) all from right within the app.

Maybe don’t do this experiment in front of your partner.

If you’re curious about who you’ve been messaging the most on WhatsApp, here’s how to find out:

  • Open WhatsApp
  • Tap ‘Settings’
  • Tap ‘Data and Storage Usage’
  • Tap ‘Storage Usage’

You’ll find yourself presented with a complete list of your WhatsApp contacts and groups, ranked by how much of your phone storage each of them is taking up. This includes messages, photos, GIFs, videos and voice notes.

Tapping on any specific chat will tell you how much space each category is taking up on your phone, as well as how many messages you’ve shared since you last wiped the chat.

It’s important to note that photos and videos take up more space than regular old messages. So, if you recently shared 50 snaps from your New Year’s party in a group chat, it’ll probably take the top spot on your list.

If you’re more interested in how many messages you have sent and received in total, there’s a way to do that too:

  • Open WhatsApp
  • Tap ‘Settings’
  • Tap ‘Data and Storage Usage’
  • Tap ‘Network Usage’

This will present you with a breakdown of how many messages you have sent and how many have been sent to you. Don’t worry if your ‘Received’ count is significantly higher than your ‘Sent’ – this likely just means you’re in a couple of active group chats so the number of messages you receive outweighs those you send.

While WhatsApp is a hugely popular messaging app, it isn’t the only one and finding out you’ve sent more messages to your best friend or your boss than your boyfriend doesn’t really mean anything at all.

That said, you might want to try these tips out on your own before you go running to your partner this Valentine’s Day.
