Notification previews are a great way for iPhone users to get a snapshot of the content without having to open up the app itself.
It’s especially useful with messaging apps like WhatsApp when notifications can often flood in very quickly. The functionality falls somewhat short when it comes to media previews, simply telling users they’ve received an photo, video or gif rather than displaying the imagery itself.
In many cases, depending on who’s sending you the message, that might be a blessing in disguise.
However, the Facebook owned app is planning to rectify that. WhatsApp is now testing media previews within the beta version of its iOS application, WABetaInfo reports. This will enable users to see images and even GIF files within the preview.

Appearing in WhatsApp version 2.18.80, the preview will show the image in full, or give you the opportunity to do download it. Here’s what the notification will look like with media previews in effect.
“To view the media preview, it will be necessary to Peek and Pop or swipe down the notification,” the site reports. “Our tests revealed the feature will work for iOS 10 and newer.”
It’s not yet clear when the feature will arrive for all users, but at least WhatsApp is putting it to the test within the beta versions. We should note WhatsApp often tests features that don’t always make it into the main app, but this definitely one to keep an eye on.
Elsewhere the same app version improves voice messaging via Siri. Users can now send messages to groups using Apple’s personal assistant. Currently the main app limits this to one-on-one chats.
