WhatsApp can now be used as a one-way mailing list

There’s a new update rolling out for WhatsApp that should make it a little easier to communicate in group chats.

Sometimes less is more, and that couldn’t be more accurate for WhatsApp group chats used to spread information about current affairs, like what’s happening in your area, on your road or at your child’s school, wherein the last thing you want is for a debate to spark with 200 people all throwing in their two penn’orth at once.

That’s why WhatsApp has introduced the option to restrict the sending of messages to just administrators – a simple change that’s bound to make a world of difference in a chat filled with hundreds of people, who could previously all pipe up at the same time, sending your handset into a state of notification-sounding turmoil.

“One way people use groups is to receive important announcements and information, including parents and teachers at schools, community centers, and non-profit organizations,” explains WhatsApp in a blog post. “We’ve introduced this new setting so admins can have better tools for these use-cases.”

To enable the option:

  • Open up a group chat you’re an administrator of.
  • Tap Group Info.
  • Select Group Settings.
  • Locate Send Messages and click Only Admins.
