Is WhatsApp Down? Messaging app hit by global outage

UPDATE (19:20 GMT): Normal WhatsApp service appears to be resuming in the United States and the UK, although users in many nations are still reporting outages.

Original story continues below…

Have you noticed WhatsApp acting weirdly this Thursday afternoon/evening? Us too. The Facebook-owned messaging app appears to be suffering from a major outage.

At the time writing 18:45 UK time (13:45 ET), messages were not being sent or received.

A quick check of the useful DownDetector website has users reporting outages in India, Italy, Chile, Romania, Mexico, Russia, Spain, Brazil, France, the US, Holland, Argentina, Germany and more.

We can confirm the app offered a push notification “checking for messages” but none have been forthcoming for half an hour now.

Twitter users are also confirming the current outage in the most Twitter way imaginable.

WhatsApp is yet to address the issue on its communications platforms.

This is a developing story and we’ll keep you updated…
