Warhammer embraces augmented reality with new trading card game from PlayFusion

A new collaboration between Games Workshop and PlayFusion is set to bring Warhammer screeching into the 21st century as an augmented reality game.
But this tabletop game is a little different from the traditional Warhammer experience. Instead of being based around figurines, the new game will be a trading card game.
PlayFusion is no stranger to trading card games, having already released a TCG based on its own IP, Lightseekers.
However, the new game will draw upon the sprawling Warhammer universe for its characters and setting.
Hundreds of cards combined with augmented reality
The new trading card game, which is set to launch in July 2018, will feature hundreds of cards and will be combined with iOS and Android apps, as well as a PC game.
The software side of the experience will use PlayFusion’s own ‘Enhanced Reality Engine’ to animate virtual characters over the cards in augmented reality. Previously, we’ve seen this kind of technology before with experiences such as Sony’s PS3 game Eye of Judgement.
In addition to the augmented reality portion of the experience, you’ll also be able to import your physical cards into the digital game to play against other collectors online.
PlayFusion will be revealing more about the new game at GDC out in San Francisco.
