At a price point of $349/£319 the Apple HomePod is subjectively expensive, especially when compared to the Google Home and Amazon Echo speakers.
While Apple’s device offers much better sound than its rivals, its appeal is lessened by the ineffectiveness of Siri as pertains to Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
However, if you’re Apple through and through, only one solution will do. Loyalists in the United States can now save $90 (around £67) on the HomePod speaker, if they’re willing to grab a refurbished model.
Best Buy is selling a refurbished speaker for $259.99 (around £196) in both the Space Grey and White variants. The US retailer says the deal is available for a limited time, while supplies last. Shipping is free.
Room for improvement
Although early reviews haven’t gushed over HomePod’s overall functionality, there’s plenty of room for HomePod to improve through software updates and optimisations. We know Siri is going to get much better in iOS 12, while the long awaited AirPlay 2 feature arrived last month.
The delayed feature enables two HomePods to be paired for stereo sound, while they can be networked with others for whole home audio.
In his review Evan Kypreos writes: “If you want the slickest smart speaker around, the HomePod isn’t it. But if you’ve totally bought into the Apple ecosystem and value audio quality above all, then the HomePod is second to none.”
