The Walking Dead Season 9 confirmed with a new trailer and showrunner

The Walking Dead Season 9 has been confirmed with a trailer slating the next instalment of the zombie-filled series for February.

Following on from the cliffhanger ending of Season 8, the next series will keep up with the fight between an alliance of semi do-gooders led by prime character Nick Grimes and the brutal saviours faction and their leader Negan.

So effectively, it’s business as usual for the upcoming season, with the trailer hinting at a continuation of the all-out war between the factions against a backdrop of a zombie apocalypse.

The pacing of the series looks to be frenetic which will be a shot in the arm for the relatively slow pacing and arguably heavy exposition found in most of Season 7 and Season 8.

And with Season 9 comes a changing of the guard for the writers, with showrunner Scott Gimple being replaced by long-serving writer Angela Kang, who’ll take over the creative reins for Season 9.

Gimple is moving up to become the Chief Content Officer and will oversee The Walking Dead franchise as a whole, which also includes the spin-off series Fear the Walking Dead.

The shift in showrunners could bring some much-needed changes to The Walking Dead, which started out full of energy and solid-pacing with plenty of creative twists only to star flagging in more recent series.

The past two seasons have been loudly criticised for artificially teasing out tension and not really advancing the plot by any great degree or performing jarring U-turns for characters.

Kang has been recognised as the writer of well-received episodes such as The Same Boat, Coda and Judge, Jury, Executioner. So there’s plenty of potential for her to reinvigorate the slightly flagging series.
