Vodafone has announced a new car tracking system designed to help drivers who forget where they’ve parked, alert agents if there’s an accident and tell users if they’re driving unsafely.
The new V-Auto box (£85 upfront and £4 a month thereafter) includes a V-SIM that’ll allow Vodafone customers to pinpoint the position of their vehicle via GPS.
The positioning of the car can also be shared with family members, enabling them to keep tabs on theirwhereabouts on a companion iOS/Android app.
This may make it an ideal solution for parents who’re letting their youths lose on the roads for the first time.
Vodafone is also including an SOS feature that will automatically notify “trained agents” if drivers are in an accident. An agent will call their registered phone to arrange help if needed.
The network is also touting the V-Auto as a means of collating journeys. It’ll tell you how long drivers have spent on the road, inform them how they drove and will alert them if it believes they could be taking a different route.
V-Auto will even send a Driving Safety Score, which will critique driving skills and send tips for improvement. It’s kind of like those passenger seat drivers we all know and dearly love. Who wants to pay £85 for that privilege?

In all seriousness, the tech is likely to prove useful in a number of use cases and the starting price isn’t too taxing. It sounds like a good option for those who want to enjoy the benefits of some connectivity without splashing out on a brand new smart car.
