Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 – A £300 iPhone and Galaxy S7 rival with a free VR headset

It will surprise some of you to learn Vodafone has been making (mostly cheap) phones for years. But today, it launched its first ever high-end handset – and it looks really good.

The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 is a true flagship handset, sporting a 5.5-inch 2K display (543 pixels per inch), and a premium glass/metal design. It’s also got two cameras – 16- and 8-megapixels – plus a fingerprint scanner on the rear. All this is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 652 processor, while juice is supplied by a hefty 3,000mAh battery.

It only comes in one storage variant (32GB), but there’s a microSD slot that supports cards up to 128GB. It’s got Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 technology too, and supports 4G/LTE connections. The final important point to make is that it runs on Google’s latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system. Huzzah!

But wait, there’s more: Vodafone is bundling an own-brand virtual reality headset with the Smart Platinum 7. The headset works just like Samsung’s Gear VR, insofar as you can slide your Vodafone phone into it to function as a VR display.

“What makes the Smart Platinum 7 special?,” writes Vodafone. “Pretty much everything. It’s been lovingly designed around a smorgasbord of top tier specs, allowing it to capably rub shoulders with the big boys in terms of power, while more than looking the part to boot.”

The best bit, mind, is the price; Vodafone is selling the Smart Platinum 7 for just £300 on Pay-As-You-Go. You can also pick it up on contract, starting from £28 per month.
