Vodafone Intros Flat Rate Roaming Data Tariffs

While Vodafone was the first to market with a mobile data card way back in 2004 it has since been caught and surpassed by T-Mobile with its industry leading flat rate bundles. Time to get back in the game…

This week the monster telco has announced reduced flat rate mobile broadband data packages and – importantly – capped charges while roaming abroad.

Under the scheme members will now pay just £25 per month for flat rate data access from their laptop, while 24-hour periods of data usage abroad will be capped at a maximum charge of £8.50. This latter offer may seem expensive, but compared to previous rates (which charged up to £9 per megabyte when roaming) this is positively heaven-sent. As a further bonus Vodafone has also warmed to the occasional user with ‘Mobile Broadband 24’ a scheme where customers sign a contract but only pay for individual 24 hours periods (3pm to 3pm/ 11am to 11am, etc) also for £8.50 a throw.

Finally, if you’re a power user with an extensive travelling schedule Vodafone has introduced ‘Mobile Broadband Travel’ with provides 200MB of data usage per month on any network where the company has a data roaming agreement (this stretches from Albania to Ukraine – full details here).

On the downside when Vodafone says ‘Flat Rate’ the usual fair usage policies apply but with 3GB per month allowed for UK data, 50MB per 24 hour roaming session and 500MB per 24 hour UK session you shouldn’t run into too many difficulties.

Prices for the data card are predictably free for Mobile Broadband Travel users and those who take up an 18 month contract. If you sign for a year the cost is £49 while Broadband 24 customers predictably accrue the largest initial charge at £120.

Any else think the EC’s recent ruling on voice calls may have had something to do with this

”’Update 21.06.07:”’ It has been pointed out to me today by one avid reader that Vodafone, being the ‘profit driven’ company that it is, will not be automatically upgrading existing customers to these improved data tariffs. Instead you’ll have to call up and duke it out with the intellectual lottery that is the network’s call centre. Good luck my friends, you’ll need it…
