VKWorld Discovery S1 glasses-free 3D smartphone announced

A new glasses-free 3D smartphone has been announced in the form of the VKWorld Discovery S1.
Thought that the whole 3D fad had passed, and that it was safe to return to your comfortable 2D smartphone? You’re right – it has and it is.
2011 saw the launch of the HTC Evo 3D and the LG Optimus 3D, but both manufacturers have long since retreated to 2D territory.
However, Chinese manufacturer VKWorld appears determined to give 3D smartphones one final bid for relevance – and in HD at that. Well, sort of HD.
Meet the VKWorld Discovery S1 (via Phone Arena). It has a 5.5in 720p display, which doesn’t sound particularly sharp by modern 2D standards. However, given that the sharpest of those aforementioned 3D phones was a mere 950 x 540, it’s actually quite a step up.
Also, said display is notable for featuring a 3D component that doesn’t require special glasses. It’s a similar effect to that achieved by the Nintendo 3DS.

Of course, those phones from HTC and LG also offered the ability to take 3D photos and videos. There’s no apparent sign of such a feature on the VKWorld Discovery S1, although we don’t have the whole spec sheet just yet.
We also don’t know when the VKWorld Discovery S1 will ship, or how much it will cost – we’ll keep you posted. Provided the phone doesn’t go the way of almost every other 3D gizmo over the past five years, of course.
