It seems to be a week when ambivalently received products actually turn out to be red hot sales hits. So following on from our apparent love of the PlayStation 3 are the roaring sales of Windows Vista.
Official Microsoft figures say a remarkable 20 ”million” licenses of Vista have found new owners since it was released at the end of January. By comparison Windows XP sold 17 million copies in the first two months since its release in 2001.
“We are encouraged to see such a positive consumer response to Windows Vista right out of the gate,” said Bill Veghte, Corporate VP of the Windows Business Group. “While it’s very early in the product lifecycle, we are setting a foundation for Windows Vista to become the fastest-adopted version of Windows ever.”
More interesting than this however is news from Dell VP Neil Hand who said these figures have been augmented by much stronger than expected sales of premium Vista editions, notably Ultimate. So are with drawn to Vista Ultimate or just displeased with the lower offerings?
On top of this we also once again find ourselves in dodgy statistics land and some important facts have to be considered. Firstly, the figures don’t separate full packaged consumer purchases from OEM editions or copies shipped with new PCs so they don’t indicate popularity just raw sales. Secondly, the number of PC owners has increased vastly since 2001 so the sales of Vista were always likely to be far greater than XP. Finally, when XP shipped it was barely a year since both Windows 2000 and Windows Millennium launched consequently reducing the desire to upgrade.
Still, I have to admit… 20 million sales are, like, ”20 freakin’ million!”
