Video: Netflix developer creates an awesome custom UI for Oculus Rift

Netflix has created a custom user interface for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, which enables wearers to literally look for a movie or TV show.

The experimental UI was a product of the company’s annual Hack Day, during which developers are able to ditch their daily responsibilities in order to work on projects that interest them.

The three dimensional interface allows Rift users to gaze around the Netflix library, while the integration of a Leap Motion controller brings scrolling gestures into the mix.

Naturally, the product is just a proof of concept and it’s unclear whether Netflix will ever launch such an app. However, with Facebook reportedly speaking with movie studios over acquiring Rift-centric movie content, it would be no surprise to see Netflix pursue a Rift app in the future.

Another highlight from Hack Day was the integration with Philips’ Hue smart light bulbs, allowing users to set their room’s lighting depending on the movie they’re watching.

One developer also created a mini-player extension for Google Chrome that allows users to watch while they work.

Netflix posted a disclaimer on its website warning users not to get too excited, but the products certainly show off the bright, forward thinking minds operating at Netflix HQ.

“These are some examples of some of the hacks to give you a taste of what we saw this time around,” The company wrote:

“We should note that, while we think these hacks are very cool and fun, they may never become part of the Netflix product, internal infrastructure, or otherwise be used beyond Hack Day. We are surfacing them here publicly to share the spirit of the Netflix Hack Day.”
