VIA's updated thin client is intended as a low cost system for the education market.
UK based manufacturer Industrial Computer Products (ICP) has announced the availability of an updated thin client based on VIA’s EPIA-MII6000E motherboard. Aimed primarily at the education market, it offers a number of benefits over conventional PC motherboards, such as a small form factor, an embedded fanless CPU, and wireless capability.
The EPIA-MII6000E features a fanless 600MHz Via Eden CPU and can support up to 1GB of DDR memory. Wireless can be added via its CardBus slot or the integrated 10/100 Ethernet connector can be used for a wired LAN. Other connectivity includes USB 2.0, FireWire and a Compact Flash slot. A PCI slot provides internal expandability and the system box features a 100W power supply.
The system can be obtained both with or without a hard drive. The built-in Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) in the BIOS, enables the machine to boot over the network. This makes the EPIA Thin Client an attractive option for universities and schools looking for low-cost, low-noise, and low-maintenance research tools. They can be used for desktop publishing and other general office applications or used for accessing the Internet in noise sensitive environments such as college libraries.
Tom Baxter, Marketing Representative for ICP stated that, “many schools and universities have felt pressured into buying expensive Windows-based PCs. These systems give them a low-cost alternative”.
In addition, the machines can also be obtained as conventional Windows-based machines with disk drives.
The EPIA Thin Client is available from ICP at a cost of £110 for a single unit or £104 in batches of ten. Prices excluded VAT and shipping.
