VIA Samples K8T900

A new flagship mobo 'sales' into port.

Mobo time again and I can already sense the fear from those of you who’ve just bought one. Don’t you know it is never safe to upgrade in IT, ”ever!”

VIA is the developer about to give you a strong sense of buyer’s remorse, since it has started sampling its eagerly awaited K8T900 chipset. This headlining model is the first design from the company to implement a dual 8x PCI Express interface. A single 16x PCI Express slot can alternatively be supported, but that isn’t nearly so exciting.

Backing this up is RapidFire, VIA’s own proprietary technology to enhance PCI Express performance (fancy talk for improving latency and boosting signal quality). Bold statements from the company boast this will make the K8T900 the fastest gaming mobo on the market, but you’ll have to take that with the usual kilo of salt until we get a unit into the labs and benchmark the hell out of it.

It is also the mobo designed to work with S3 Graphics’ upcoming MultiChrome technology, which enable two or more Chrome S27 cards to operate together. Is this great news? We dunno, again this kit hasn’t hit the market yet…

Behind these future looking aspects is a strong, if more typical, feature set courtesy of a VT8251 south bridge. You know the drill here: 8x USB2.0, 4x SATA II, RAID with VIA V-RAID support and high def 7.1 audio. The K8T900 is also pin-for-pin compatible with existing K8T890 platforms.

The price has yet to be set and it won’t arrive until Q1, so what is that rustling noise I hear? Ah yes, it is the recent motherboard purchasers frantically searching for their receipts. Try down the back of the sofa, there’s always stuff down there.
