Meet Verily, Alphabet’s revamped Google Life Sciences

Google Life Sciences was once just a cog in the mysterious Google X machine, but the organisation has finally flown the coop.

Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc. has announced the rebranding of Google Life Sciences as Verily.

Verily is Alphabet’s research organisation that studies life sciences – that’s the study of living organisms and bioethics.

In August this year, Google X director Sergey Brin announced that Google Life Sciences would become an independent subsidiary of Alphabet.

That restructuring finished on October 2, and the division will now operate under the Verily moniker.

“Imagine a chemist and an engineer and a doctor and a behavioural scientist, all working together to truly understand health and to better prevent, detect, and manage disease,” reads Verily’s mission statement. “Picture a world in which technology and life sciences are not distinct, but partners with a united mission.”

The piece continues: “At Verily, that’s the world we want to create. Our mission is to bring together technology and life sciences to uncover new truths about health and disease.”

Google Life Sciences first began operations in 2012, developing contact lenses for diabetics that could track glucose levels.

However, the organisation now works on a wide range of health issues, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mental health.

Verily builds both software and hardware, and has dedicated clinical and science teams.
